i wouldn't take the .us one, cos it will only be viewable for those people who have the privileges for it..
I've read in the paper, there was a guy who sold a lot of .us domains to people like you and me. But those people didn't get any visitors, because the .us domain is only viewable by a few people who have the right privileges for it. And he had to give all the money back..
But than again, i don't know if its still the same, i read it not that long ago though.

mkolsenfan that guy was selling registrations on an alternate root, sort of like new.net which only some people can view
.us domains are real and can be seen by anyone just like .com .net .org etc...

All country domain names have qualifications you must meet to own it.
I don't remember it all but i think its:
1. Be a citizen of that country.
2. Have the server at that country
3. Have a company in that country.
oh wait, i remember Godaddy.com has some info on teh .us(which should apply to all country level domian names, just substitue the country name, but of course i coukld be wrong):
------------------------------------------------------------
Who Qualifies for a .US Address?
To qualify for a .US domain name you must meet one of the following Nexus Requirements.
All .US Registrants must be either:
A natural person (i) who is a United States citizen, (ii) who is a permanent resident of the United States or any of its possessions or territories, or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or;
An entity or organization that is (i) incorporated within one of the fifty (50) United States, the district of Columbia, or any of the United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia or any of its possessions (including a federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof, and non-commercial organizations based in the United States), or;
A foreign entity or organization that has a bona fide presence in the United States or any of its possession or territories that also (i) regularly engages in lawful activities (sales of goods or services or other business, commercial or non-commercial including not-for- profit activities) in the Unites States, or (ii) maintains an office or other property within the United States.
In addition, all name servers listed for .US domain names must be located within the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories.
If .US Registrants fail to continue to abide by the Nexus Requirements, or their qualifications cannot be verified, the registered domain name shall be subject to immediate cancellation.
------------------------------------------------------------
I also suggest registering with Godaddy for .us domain, cause thei like 6.95 a year and 12.90 for two years

.us requires you to live in the us

And as far as i know there is no registrar that will accept it

Infering from what is said, it looks like .US is limiting only viewers in the US to view it. Therefore resulting in less useless bandwidth usage from people who are from other countries that can't read english. Very money saving these days. I think the reason that a lot of people don't go to .US sites is because of that US citizen qualification, search engine submission, and that .US is pretty new. People with .com, .net, or .org sites have an advantage over .US because people sometimes type in random urls like animevault.com, animevault.net, animevault.org. I would of never really tried guessing animevault.us. Well, the only way .US sites can get recognized is through links or search engine submission. Search engine submissiosn take a long-long-long time, except if you're submitting to Google; Google is really good because if a site is linked to a site, it will also post the sites that are linked to that site. It is just a matter of popularity among the internet.

Your absolutely wrong!
Anyone can VIEW a .us site
The restriction only applies to people REGISTERING a .us domain
Maybe the site itself is blocking you from accessing it, thats not a restriction of the .us domain, its the site owner blocking you!
I prefer .com (and to a lesser degree .net) over country specific domains

how many of you actually know or remember what all the suffixes are? .org isnt really an educational suffix, .edu is. .org is organization, .edu is education, .com is commercial i think, .net is network(duh), .gov is governmental, i know there are more but i cant remember them. then you got your other suffixes like .us, .uk, .tk, etc... but those are pretty much self explanitory. if im wrong on one of those, please correct it ;)

Well, sometimes educational facilities get a .org instead of a .edu because it's too much of a hassel to get the .edu one. ;)
Also many country suffixes are used for other things. For example, .tv and .ws are used as media/televison and website, respectively.

it really depends what the site is to be used for
as i live in the uk i have my domain .co.uk
but if u have the cash then why not a .com one
if ur a bit strapped for cash then try contry specific ones??? or a .net 1
but in the end the choice is yours:cool: ;)

the reason i cant gat a .com because animevault.com is already taken unless you think theanimevault.com is good:D
